We arrived into Costa Rica's second largest airport, Liberia, picked up our rental car, and drove straight to Rip Jack Inn. Rip Jack Inn is a small hotel within walking distance to an amazing 3 mile stretch of beach with some excellent surf. The beach is called Playa Grande.

The hotel is pretty nice and has a good restaurant as well. It's not a large hotel, so it was pretty quiet the entire time we were there. I would recommend it. Note however, there isn't much in the area. It's pretty residential, so you'll have to make a drive to find food and other activities.

Playa Grande had some pretty strong surf while I was there. The waves were decently clean. But the best part was that there was hardly anyone at the beach, and hardly anyone surfing. I probably saw a dozen people total. I highly recommend checking it out. This was in 2006, and so I'm not sure if it's going to be nearly as empty today. I recall several lots having been partitioned off and being sold by Century 21 while I was there, so there may be hundreds of Americans who own homes there now.

Has anyone surfed here recently? If so, post a comment and let us know how it is nowadays.
